The Culture of Suroan
We know that Java is one of the largest tribes in Indonesia, it has variety of traditions and cultures, it is called Javanese culture. Now days, one of culture which is still harmonize and practice in East Java is Suroan. Suroan is a form of celebration in the month of Ashura or Muharam by holding certain rituals or processes. Do you know how culture happen and what the processes in Suroan are?
Actually, the culture of Suroan based from ancient people who
believes this month is sacred, full of berkah and they decided to make
celebration and some rituals in the event of Suroan. The Concept of Suroan is beginning
from villagers make bubur suro to share with their neighbour in the
morning, in the afternoon they take some traditional foods for other villagers
that joined carnival. The day after the two events held, it will be held
pengajian in the night and closing ceremony of Suroan, it will present a
traditional performance that’s called wayang kulit, it is a part from
Javanese culture also.
The culture of Suroan is part of Javanese culture that combine with
Islamic culture, this culture is an expression of gratitude from villagers to
God of all the fortune that they have received all of the time. This culture
still exist until now, exactly in the rural area in East Java, East Java has
many kind of cultures, so every culture have different meaning and rituals.
Thus, the aims of this paper to explain the rituals of Suroan from village
Genukwatu, city of Jombang, East Java.
